Call for Artists
The University Club of Portland will accept applications for the 2011-2012 Artist-In-Residence program in early 2011. This year-long program offers a professional studio artist, living in Oregon or Southern Washington, the opportunity to create in a private studio, offer group or private classes, workshops, and lectures, and enjoy complimentary Membership in Portland's premier social club in Portland. The artist’s works will be exhibited throughout the University Club and offered for sale to Members, staff, and guests. The purpose of the Artist-In-Residence program is to promote the work of Northwest artists and to enhance the art collection of the University Club of Portland. Professional artists working in the following fields will be considered for Residency: Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
Benefits to Artist-In-Residence
The University Club of Portland is a unique and extraordinary private social club. Founded in 1898, the Club’s 800 Members include professionals from the public and private sectors, business owners, authors, artists, and leaders in government and education.
The University Club of Portland Artist-in-Residence is chosen for a residency of one year. Upon acceptance, the University Club of Portland will host an Artist’s Gallery Opening in the fall, for all current University Club Members and their guests. The artist selected as the University Club of Portland’s Artist-In-Residence receives a complimentary year-long Membership in the University Club of Portland as well as access to reciprocal clubs worldwide. The Artist-In-Residence program includes additional benefits of a complimentary twice-monthly luncheon privilege for two, and an invitation to attend one complimentary University Club-sponsored event for two annually with food and non-alcoholic beverages included. A dedicated studio space of approximately 200 sq. ft. is provided for the artist's use.
Through classes and lectures, the artist has access to the large and select Membership of the University Club of Portland. The Artist-In-Residence will offer fee-based classes to University Club Members as well as complimentary lectures and/or demonstrations as appropriate. The artist’s works for sale are displayed prominently throughout the Club for the entire year of residency and no commission will be taken by the University Club of Portland from the sale of those works. The Artist-In-Residence will donate a recent piece of work to remain in the permanent collection of the University Club of Portland.
Selection Process
Professional artists working in the following fields will be considered for Residency: Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Selection will be made on the basis of portfolio submission, artist statement, and personal presentation. Teaching is a strong component of the program. The Artist-In-Residence agrees to offer classes, workshops, and lectures as appropriate to Membership interests. Proximity to Portland is of value as the program requires member participation.
