MA Student in School of Sociology, Sociology

Elisabeth Wilder received herBachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Pennsylvania State University, whereshe received numerousscholarships and awards for her work. She graduated summa cum laude at theage of twenty, spent four years as a teacher in a low-income community withTeach for America, and then became an Assistant Director for EnvironmentCalifornia. Elisabeth’s passion for social and environmental justice led her toPortland State University, where she is currently a Master’s candidate inSociology. Her research focuses on media representations ofthe Keystone XL pipeline, which, if approved, would transport one of the world’s dirtiestfuels—tar sands oil—from Canada to the United States. Carbon dioxide emissions from tar sands oil are three times higher thanthose of conventional oil; James Hansen, NASA scientist and eminentclimatologist, has publicly stated that if the Keystone pipeline is built, itwill be “game over for the climate”. However, about half of the Americanpopulation thinks that it should be approved. Elisabeth evaluates whether the media is providing citizenswith the full range of information about Keystone XL, and, more broadly, analyzes the ideological landscape of the mass media and the extent towhich it facilitates or limits discourse in civil society.
